European advancements in warfare Essay
The Inter-war period between World War I and World War II was a time that governments relied on treaties and pacts to maintain peace rather than wage war. Some of these treaties and pacts did more to instigate war than to help deter it. Some examples of these are the Versailles Treaty, which basically all but dismantled the German military structure, another example is that of the Paris Peace Act of 1928, which was â⬠a voluntary renunciation of war as an instrument of national policyâ⬠. Because treaties such as these, the reciprocal effect of any deviation caused tensions which eventually resulted in global conflict. What we will discuss in the following essay will cover weapon and doctrinal advancements, which were intended to return decisiveness, back to the business of waging war, with minimal losses of equipment and human life. During the inter-war period, militaries were primarily led by officers who were conservative in their approach to military structure and combat. One notable and very important aspect that became a topic of much debate during the period between WWI and WWII was that of armored and motorized warfare. Not only armored vehicles such as tanks but also motorized vehicles for logistical purposes as well. The conservative stance regarding these new weapons systems, which were introduced during WWI, was that they were to be utilized in a support role for the infantry and cavalry. This came at a time when most of the armies of the world were transitioning away from horse-drawn supply trains and tactical cavalry, due to the modernization of motorized military vehicles. Several leaders who opposed the conservatives on the role of armor and motorized warfare went on to become some of the most well known military writers ever. Two of these men were British General J.F.C. Fuller and British Captain B.H. Liddell Hart. Both of these British officers wrote and created doctrine that would be instrumental in the waging of armored warfare for not only WWII but also well into the twenty-first century. Instead of using tanks and tracked artillery for nothing more than infantry support they believed in, and created doctrine that placed an emphasis on fast moving offensive operations that would strike deep into the enemyââ¬â¢s territory, so fast as to render the enemies attempt to regain a structuredà defense or counter attack futile. This ironically would be the template for the German blitzkrieg, which was implemented by Heinz Guderian after extensive research of Fuller and Liddell Hartââ¬â¢s doctrinal advancements. Although the British had well made tanks which could carry out this type of warfare, Guderian took this to another level with improvements to tank engines and armament and also the structuring of motorized divisions to carry out this new brand of warfare. It was believed by these men, that one tank could do what it would take a company of infantryman to do, and more! Advancements in the inter-war period were not only on ground fighting doctrine and weaponry, but also in the naval aspects as well. During the 1920ââ¬â¢s, the Washington Naval Treaty imposed strict guidelines upon the navies of the U.S., Japan, France and Italy. These guidelines kept ships to certain regulations that limited the size of guns and of the countries entire navy itself. What this did basically caused atrophy in naval progression. In the 1930ââ¬â¢s when Hitlerââ¬â¢s Germany openly disavowed compliance with the Versailles Treaty and began the re-galvanizing of itââ¬â¢s army and navy, it caused the nations which would become Germanyââ¬â¢s enemies to begin changing doctrine and methods in the conduct of naval operations. Also, the arrival of the aircraft carrier in almost every advanced navy created new threats with aircraft. The Japanese utilized aircraft carriers heavily in the war in the Pacific, as well did the United States. No two countries during WWII put so much emphasis on the carrier. What the carrier did was to allow aircraft to be launched from a ship far away into either enemy territory or enemy seas to attack either ships or targets on land without risking the loss of a naval ship. This was a naval doctrine created during the inter-war period. Air forces also went through extensive change during the inter-war period. First, the advancements of aircraft themselves in this period were perhaps the largest and most significant technological advancement of all. Airplanes had developed into short-range fighters, which could attack with speeds that were un-thought of in the era of bi-planes. Also, there was the advent of long range fighters to escort long-range bombers, which could hold large amounts of ordinance to drop on the enemyââ¬â¢s cities. Because of theseà advancements, countries began racing to create the best aircraft that they could make. Each country would create superior aircraft in an effort to control the sky. The two countries that set the pace in this regard were Germany and Japan. Both enemies to Britain and the US, these two countries pushed the Allies to make formidable opposition and air defense systems. The period between WWI and WWII was a period of radical change to doctrine and weaponry. The creation of treaties and the League of Nations served as nothing more than a hopeful buffer to deter the waging of war. By creating these strict guidelines, the world did nothing more than antagonize one another to the point of global conflict. Advancements made during this period were a direct result of men who knew that peace could never truly be attained with peace.

Analyzing the Contrast Of Romeo and Juliet Essay - 1061 Words
Analyzing the Contrast Of Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeares greatest and most popular plays, a romantic tragedy written in about 1593. An underlying feature running throughout the play is Shakespeares use of contrast, love/hate, young/old, life/death, light/dark, tragedy/comedy and real/unreal. Shakespeare draws out, illustrates and emphasises those contrasts by clever use of language, character, and the plot itself. What I feel is one of the most important aspects of the play is the contrast between love and hate, and I will deal with this aspect now. The whole basis of the play is the great love between Romeo and Juliet which is set against the background ofâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦So love is immediately contrasted with hate. The love between Romeo Juliet is today a symbol of great romantic love between a man and a woman. A great lover is called a Romeo. There are so many examples of the great love between Romeo Juliet but my favourite speech in the play ( which shows Juliets great love for Romeo in the clearest light) is in Act 3 Scene 2: ....and when he shall die, Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heaven so fine that all the world will be in love with night and pay no attention to the Garish sun Romeo Juliet show romantic love but Shakespeare also contrasts different types of love as well. Romantic love is contrasted with unromantic love where people marry not for love but for financial reasons or to advance their social status. There is the contrast between spiritual love and sexual love. Between passionate love and love in moderation. However the main contrast is still between love itself and the fighting and hate between the Montagues and the Capulets. Perhaps the next great contrast in the play is between Light and Dark. To Romeo, Juliet is the shining light-a light that shines in the darkness. Everything bad is black, but everything to do with Juliet is white and bright This contrast isShow MoreRelatedWilliam Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet1225 Words à |à 5 Pagessadistic men, and murmurs between old, happy couples. Equality, Diversity, and Democracy free essay sample
Justice and Equality Cannot Coexist, For When One is Achieved the Other is Infringed Upon: Equality, diversity, and democracy are the three components that America claims to revolve around, but unfortunately lacks. America is a nation filled with envy, rage, and such preposterous behaviors and actions. Since the founding of the nation, to the present of America, and according to the predicament of the future, this territorial notion that America abides by is slowly corrupting the nation.Since the establishment of America equality was always an issue, but always an issue of avoidance. In the article Deconstructing America, Buchanan states, ââ¬Å"As for the Africans, they arrived in 1619 in slave ship, and were not freed for 246 years. Then they were segregated for a centuryâ⬠(465). Buchanan stresses the idea that America claims to be a picture perfect nation where all is equal, but in reality theyââ¬â¢ve lacked equality since their uprising. Another idea that Buchanan stresses elaborates more in the idea that equality has been an issue in America. In Buchananââ¬â¢s article Deconstructing America, he refers to the English, the Virginians, and the Americans in this quote: ââ¬Å"They believed in superiority of their Christian faith and English culture and civilization. And they transplanted that unique faith, culture, and civilization to the Americaââ¬â¢s fertile soil. Other faiths, cultures, and civilizations like the ones the Indians had here, or the Africans brought, or the French had planted in the Quebec, or the Spanish in Mexico ___ they rejected and resisted with cannon, musket, and sword. This was our land, not anybody elseââ¬â¢s. (466)â⬠Americans have been, and still in some ways are territorial and limited to their beliefs, customs, and rituals. These beliefs were more crucial in the past decades, but still havenââ¬â¢t drastically changed. Equality is past of freedom of speech and that idea is also restricted in America. For example, African Americans still endure hardships in America to this day. Their options and privileges are narrowed down. How does a nation expect respect from its own people, when the nation itself is corrupting? The diversity in America has expanded tremendously, it no longer consist of more than half of the population being Caucasians. The many different ethnicities in America are fluctuating as time passes by; the minorities are now becoming the majority. The idea that America has become such a diverse nation is what is causing problems within a nation itself. Many of the problems America has undergone is due to the immensity if diversity, and all the ethnicities grudging each other. In Spike Leeââ¬â¢s film Do The Right Thing, this idea is shown more clearly. In a neighborhood of African Americans and Puerto Ricans, the owners of the pizzeria belittle the African Americans who reside there. Pino the son of the owner, Sal, constantly has something crude to say about Mookie or any African American who steps foot into the pizza parlor. In one point they kick an African American male out of the pizza parlor and that is when the fight between the two ethnicities rises. The man died after the police hit him, then the other African Americans begin a riot and a brutal fight begins, where it causes the pizza parlor to be burnt down. This whole scene allows American people to see how corrupt the diversity is making the American nation. In Deconstructing America, Buchanan states, ââ¬Å"Is the diversity strength? In the ideology of modernity, yes. But history teaches otherwise for how can racial diversity be a strength when racial diversity was behind the bloodiest war in the U. S. history and has been the most polarizing issue among us ever since? â⬠(469). Buchanan tries to point out the idea that America has war within the ethnicities that make it up.This is slowly bringing the nation to an end. Hsu restates a remark made by President Bill Clinton in 1998, in his article The End of White America? : ââ¬Å"Today, largely because of immigration, there is no majority race in Hawaii or Houston or New York City. Within five years, there will be no majority race in our largest state, California. In a little more than fifty years there will be no majority race in the United States. No other nation in history has gone through demographic change of this magnitude in so short a time . . . These immigrants] are energizing our culture and broadening our vision of the world. They are renewing our most basic values and reminding us all of what it truly means to be Americanâ⬠(500). Hsu discusses the idea that America will soon become a nation with no majority race, and that the American people take for granted all the new ideas these different ethnicities are bringing into the nation. Instead of learning from them, they seek violence and inequality as their solutions. Democracy is an even bigger issue in America. In The Journal of Ecumenical Studies, Richie states, ââ¬Å"The reality of contemporary religious pluralism may be either one of the greatest threats to democratic freedom, civil or ecclesiastical, or one of its greatest assetsâ⬠(471). Richie comes across the issue of democracy with religion, which is a big issue in America, along with all the other freedoms the American people are said to have. Every aspect in America is Democratic, America is a ââ¬Å"this or thatâ⬠nation, you canââ¬â¢t have more than one, and America wonââ¬â¢t settle for drastic changes. In the book Democracy in America, by Alexis De Tocqueville he states: ââ¬Å"In the United States the ablest men are rarely placed at the head of affairs Reason for this peculiarity The envy which prevails in the lower orders of France against the higher class is not a French but a purely democratic feeling Why the most distinguished men in America frequently seclud e themselves from public affairsâ⬠(200). De Tocqueville stresses the idea that in America people with power avoid having to deal with situations that are of importance. This idea points out how people of different ethnicities have limited advantages, when those with power donââ¬â¢t make the correct choices, or donââ¬â¢t know how to deal with them. In Deconstructing America, Buchanan states, ââ¬Å"If Jamestown and Virginia were not about democracy, equality, and diversity for the 350 years between 1607 and 1957, who invented this myth that America was always about democracy, equality, and diversity? And what was their motive? â⬠(465).
